  • Step 1: Licenses & Regulations

You must have the appropriate fishing license to fish legally in Florida and avoid fines and citations. Once you have determined where you will be fishing, purchase your FWC Fishing License for the appropriate type of fishing you will be doing. Check all FWC Requirements before fishing.

  • Step 2: Target a Species

Targeting a species will provide a higher success rate because you will be able to key in on specific techniques, baits, and tackle that a certain species prefers or bites more than another. In freshwater, a largemouth bass has a larger mouth than a fish like a crappie, meaning different sized baits and tackle may be required based on what species your targeting. In saltwater, it is typical to target a group of species (i.e. inshore species, pelagic species, or bottomfish) although it is typical for anglers to still select one particular species.

  • Determine Your Technique

After targeting your species, the next step is to determine what technique is going to catch that species based on seasonal considerations, the body of water you will be fishing, and the structure available in the water. If chosen properly, the proper technique will drastically improve your hookup rate and you will catch more fish.
